Will AI Games Revolutionise Gaming?
Modern video games are increasingly narratively branching and complex. But the ways game worlds respond to player choices are largely limited by development complexity, and AI could allow for much more. 92 Jeeto Login
One example is the use of generative AI to generate NPCs that behave more naturally and realistically, based on rules that simulate human decisions and behaviors. This allows for NPCs to make more unpredictable, dynamic responses, and it can create the appearance of human-like behavior that can enhance immersion and a sense of discovery.
Building Fully AI-Created Game Worlds
Another way that AI is changing the way we play video games is through its ability to learn and evolve during gameplay. This can add new complexities to a game, such as when AI-controlled enemies adapt their tactics during combat to counter a player’s strategy. In this way, the NPCs can seem to be hunting the player rather than acting in a generic attack/defend mode. This level of adaptation can also improve the experience of stealth-based games, where NPCs can react to audible and physical disturbances such as footsteps or a twig snapping underfoot to determine whether a player is nearby.
Not everyone is convinced that generative AI will revolutionise gaming, however. In particular, it’s not clear whether it can replace the creative geniuses who come up with high-concept, compelling stories for video games. And some developers, such as Xalavier Nelson Jr of independent studio Strange Scaffold, are wary of AI tools that would help them write a story for their game.
